TRIP INFORMATION

Climate

Due to the mountainous region, temperatures vary and weather can change rapidly. Rain gear, such as a raincoat and overtrousers or a riding raincoat that covers your legs, is required for every ride.

Terrain
The rides offer a varied pace, taking guests through forests, across pastures, and up steep mountain tracks. The scenery is beautiful and diverse, the area largely untouched by tourism. The mountainous terrain limits the speed of the ride, but there are opportunities for trots and canters each day.

Riding
Riders must be reasonably fit and be comfortable riding in walk, trot and canter. Pace of rides will vary depending on the ability of the riders and the terrain.

Hosts
The Kálnoky Family who have returned to Transylvania after 50 years of exile. Our guide, Marót Filep of Vadad speaks English, is a graduate equestrian guide and has great experience in this field.

Horses
Huzul mountain horses, Shagya Arabs, Lipizzaner crosses and other local breeds.

Tack
English general purpose and endurance saddles are used on all horses.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RIDE
This horse riding holiday is in the region north of Brasov between the towns of Sfantu Gheorghe, Baraolt and Rupea, a designated 'Natura 2000' area. This is the standard itinerary available from the beginning of April to the beginning of November. Around 5-6 hours are spent in the saddle as you travel through wild hills and forest landscapes. The villages are situated at 450 - 600m and the hills reach 700-900m. This whole region is called Erdovidek, or “Woodland”, and has been looking very much the same over the centuries.
