Horse Riding in the French Pyrenees-Winter Transhumance |
Horse Riding in the Pyrenees - France
Take part in an epic journey on horseback from high in the Pyrenees down to the foothills in the Cathar Country. The region is steeped in history with imposing medieval fortified castles occupying hilltop positions. You will be following/herding up to 70 horses from their summer pasture to their winter pasture. Travel through some wonderful countryside and stay in basic homely gites accommodation en route. This long journey follows centuries of traditional livestock seasonal movements and it is for intrepid and confident riders only. Wholesome French cooking will recharge your batteries.

TRIP INFORMATION
Getting There
An alternative to flying is to catch the train. You can leave London St Pancras early morning and arrive Tourlouse in the evening and catch the train from Toulouse to La Tour de Carol. It is a far more relaxing and enjoyable way of travelling whilst helping to reduce your carbon footprint. Pick up is from La Tour de Carol. For further details visit www.raileurope.co.uk
Climate
Chilly! This can vary from 5°C to - 10°C. You must be prepared for cold and wet so your
clothing must be appropriate for winter riding in the mountains.
Riding
This will be a challenging ride so riders need to be experienced, confident and reasonably fit and be able to ride for
long periods of time. The pace of the ride will vary according to the terrain.
Hosts
Pierre and Carole will be your hosts for the week.
Horses
The horses are all locally bred and trained. They are sturdy and fit. They are all unshod but sure footed.
Tack
Most are ridden in bitless bridles and McLellan stock saddles.
Saddlebags are supplied for each person for the transport of personal effects.
