Horse Riding in Tanzania
Horse riding in Tanzania
We offer two professional and exciting trails in the West Kilimanjaro region; the Kilimanjaro Game Trail and the Migration Ride. Both of which will give you the opportunity of riding through African bush with many big game sightings. These rides are for experienced riders only. Guests are offered an intimate and personal experience, affording them the best that East Africa has to offer in terms of the African bush. The safaris are personalised, very much 'off the beaten track' and away from human settlement. You will be accompanied on all rides and activities by one of your knowledgeable hosts and a back up rider, ensuring that your riding holiday will be a safe and memorable one.

If you are a novice to intermediate rider, a farm-based holiday is available with riding on most days. This holiday also includes guided hikes and 4x4 vehicle drives. Non-riders itineraries are also available, noone needs stay behind! Please contact us if you are interested in this option.

KILIMANJARO GAME TRAIL

Game viewing in Tanzania

Discover the wildlife-rich western slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro as Hemingway might have done. We travel through the rain forest to the western savannah, where African animals roam freely as they have for thousands of years. You will be thrilled by breathtaking views, exhilarating canters and close contact with wildlife such as elephant, zebra, wildebeest - to name but a few.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Game viewing: During our rides we may encounter the following animals: giraffe, greater and lesser kudu, impala, Grant, Thomson, eland and oryx gazelle, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, gerenuk, dikdik, olive baboon, vervet monkey, jackal, occasionally hyena and cheetah, ostrich and a wide variety of bird species.

Please Note: Due to the climate change and the rainfall becoming unpredictable in some areas, and it has influenced the movement of the migratory herds. West Kilimanjaro where this ride takes place, due to the climate change, there has been a constantly good number of game in the area and we are able to adapt the route according to the game as we have mobile camps offering better game sightings than some years ago.

Sustainable tourism is recognised and the impact on the environment and community is extremely low. The cost includes a fixed daily amount of USD75 per person, and this is used for national organised conservation and the development of local community projects (primary schools, schools, hospitals and more).

Horse riding in Tanzania

Riding
The terrain can be uneven with areas of rocks, clumps of grass, thorns and holes. These obstacles can sometimes not be seen from far and therefore require a quick reaction of the horses - they will confidently jump or move to avoid these obstacles. They will carry riders safely, however you are expected to be balanced enough to follow the movement of the horse. You need to be able to react to the movement of wildlife which may startle the horse. You may also be required to gallop out of trouble.

Hosts
Your hosts are experienced vets who care for the needs of the domestic and 'wild' creatures of the area and provide a constant warm welcome to two- and four-legged visitors alike. This couple were both professional Endurance riders and draw on many years experience to share with you their passion for horses and the African wilderness.

Horses
The horses are much loved, well mannered and in excellent condition. They include a variety of reliable, safari trained horses like partbreds, Anglo-Arabian, Thoroughbred, Trakehner and Bavarian Warmblood ranging from 14 to 16.2 hands high - there is a horse to suit everyone. Your hosts also breed their own foals at the farm and you are bound to meet some of the youngstock.

Tack
Bridles are usually bitless (Hackamore). There are good quality treeless saddles, Endurance and Trail Saddles available.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RIDE
This is a mobile tented safari for 2-6 experienced riders at a time, making it a very personal experience. The tents are dome tents and provided with comfortable mattresses. There are toilet and hot bucket shower tents. The food is fresh and supplied locally. Emphasis is on game viewing and scenery in remote areas. The first two nights are spent at a guest house at the edge of the Kilimanjaro Reserve, where you will meet and become acquainted with your horse. You then ride on to camp for two nights (hopefully you will experience a night drive in this area) and move on for nights five and six to another camp with stunning views of Mt Meru. On the seventh day horses and riders will be met by a truck which will take you back for your last night at the farm accommodation.
