Horse Riding in Uruguay

Horse riding in Uruguay

A country the size of England and Wales with a charming, warm, friendly population of only 3 million, an ideal non-tropical riding climate, unexpectedly diverse landscapes – a little-known destination made for riding! Riding along deserted sandy beaches, between sand dunes and into pine forests, around fresh water lagoons, through palm groves and across grasslands, we arrive at idyllic settings for gourmet lunches then journey on the comfort of traditional estancias and working farms. We are accompanied by skilled gauchos, seeing a large variety of wildlife along the way as we pass through an unexpected mix of landscapes.

Horse riding in Uruguay

Riding
We ride through a variety of terrain, some parts quite steep, others on open ground. Rider will be given horses depending on their experience, however all riders must be intermediate and above. The style of riding will be neck reining (western - one handed) and help will be given in adjusting to this method.

Hosts
Sally will be our host for the week and we will have experienced guides with great knowledge of the area guiding us throughout. They give great support and are very friendly and highly passionate about the Puelo Valley area.

Horses
The horses are English, quarter horses and other breeds crossed with the local Uruguayan Criollo. They have a firm step and are well suited to the terrain. There will be spare horses accompanying the ride.

Tack
Saddles are local South American type saddle with thick sheepskin seats. They are very comfortable and excellent for long distance riding. Saddle bags will be provided.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RIDE
The route will follow the edge of the Brazilian border through Santa National Park into the Don Bosco hills where we will be able to enjoy an incredible view of the palm groves and Laguna Negra, back down to the beach where we ride along the coast to Cabo Polonio and then traverses through the eucalyptus forests across the grasslands for a last long canter.

The ride takes in a variety of terrain and landscapes and also encompasses a wide range of wildlife - and there may even be a chance to see dolphins, whales and turtles. We will travel through rivers and even take a swim in the lake with the horses. Most days are spent riding approximately 5-7 hours a day. Lunch is enroute each day and will be positioned in wonderful settings for riders to relax and enjoy the peaceful scenery.
